Why cab hours matter more than the price

The cheapest-looking quote is often the most expensive per hour of driving. Here are two typical Class 2 quotes, worked out like for like.

Quote A: training only £1,400 12 cab hours. Test fees included, but not the medical, theory or CPC tests. All in: £1,573 £131 per cab hour
Quote B: full package £1,950 20 cab hours. Medical, theory, CPC and test fees all included. All in: £1,950 £98 per cab hour

Quote A looks £550 cheaper. Like for like, the gap is £377, and for that you get 8 fewer hours in the cab at 34% more per hour. Fewer hours also means a higher chance of failing and paying for a retest. Kent Class 2 courses we've checked give 15 to 24 cab hours.

Before you pay anyone

Six questions a genuine training school can answer straight away.

  • How many hours in the cab, one-to-one? Without the hours, a price means nothing.
  • What's included? The medical, theory tests, CPC Modules 2 and 4, and DVSA test fees, which add up to £328 for Class 2 if you pay them yourself.
  • Where is the truck? A school can tell you which yard you'll train from and which test centre it uses.
  • Can I have an assessment drive before paying in full? Brokers usually can't arrange one, because the trucks belong to someone else.
  • What does a retest cost, all in? The test fee plus the truck and instructor for the day, unless retests are covered. Kent retest prices.
  • Can I see the support before I pay? A provider with a real learning platform, booking system or jobs board can show it to you now. If it's only promised for after you've paid, don't count it.
